Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene

One of the most important aspects of orthodontic treatment is oral hygiene. If you are not cleaning well enough, you may not be able to start treatment.

Once treatment starts, it is your responsibility to make sure the you look after your teeth and appliances to the best of your ability. We will monitor your oral hygiene throughout treatment, and will help you if necessary to prevent you damaging your teeth.

Interdental Toothbrush

An interdental (between the teeth) toothbrush is very good to clean underneath and around your archwires and braces to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Topical Fluoride

Fluoride is very effective at preventing tooth decay. It is especially important to have extra fluoride when you have braces on your teeth. We get some fluoride from fluoride toothpaste, but to get extra protection we recommend a weeky fluoride rinse. You can get this from the pharmacy, but it is also available at our practice: just ask at reception. (Is it?)

Cleaning Your Removable Appliance

If you have a removable appliance or retainer, be sure to brush it as part of your regular brushing and flossing schedule. If you are wearing the appliance at night only, brush it first thing in the morning when you take it out. Otherwise it will smell horrible when you come to put it in again at night.
